Emotional Impact of Car Accidents

When you think of car accidents, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the bodily and property damage ramifications. The emotional impact from the results of a car accident, however, is just as big a part of the incident as anything else. Even though parties involved in an accident may appear to be functioning normally, the devastation involved with a car accident can lead to severe emotional trauma, and should be treated with same importance as the physical impacts of an accident.

Mental and emotional trauma can occur when an event makes you lose your sense of security, rendering you feeling helpless as you cannot control the situation. Being in a car accident is one of the most common instances in which the emotional impact is overlooked because of all of the other circumstances surrounding the event which seems to take precedence. According to Richard Mayou, a professor of psychiatry at the Warneford Hospital in Oxford, England, even minor motor vehicle accidents can leave intense psychological scarring, doing more damage to an individual than the physical aspects of the collision.

Some examples of emotional trauma consist of the fear of driving a vehicle or riding as a passenger, anxiety, fear, difficulties with concentration, tension, rapid heartbeats, and feelings of hopelessness, sadness, shame, mood swings, anger, insomnia, withdrawal, confusion, and more. Some individuals may have one or two of these symptoms, while others may experience a whole range of symptoms.

Dr. Alan Steinberg, the director of research at the UCLA Trauma Psychiatric Program, states that traumatic symptom can last for months, if not years. However, if the symptoms continue to persist three months after an accident, you should seek professional treatment as soon as possible. You should look for a qualified healthcare professional that specializes in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

If you’ve been in an accident and are having difficulties with the aftermath, consider hiring an experienced car accident attorney who will fight to help you get the financial compensation and medical reimbursement that you deserve.
